Burnt Orange is situated in a beautiful heritage listed sandstone building that once was part of the army barracks at Middle Head in Mosman. The water views are spectacular and worth the drive alone but this chic eatery offers so much more. The café serves breakfast, lunch and high tea daily and the gift shop offers a fantastic range of children’s toys and clothes as well as ladies and mens attire and homewares. This place is one of the ‘it’ places at the moment so make sure you book early if you plan to visit on the weekend.
Families are very welcome here and you will see children and prams at most tables. We visited on a busy Saturday morning for brunch and made sure we booked our two highchairs in advance. Parking is in the adjacent car parks above or below Burnt Orange and charges are $4 p/h during the week and $5 p/h on the weekend. Brunch options range between $8 – $20 and food has always been to a high standard.
The kids’ special includes one egg with bacon on toast and an orange juice for $12. Many children often prefer to go for banana bread ($8) or toast ($4.50) for a smaller meal. They also provide placement for colouring and crayons which was a temporary distraction! The best feature for children are the lawns and if you ask for a table on the balcony overlooking the lawns you can even watch them from your table. You do have to watch toddlers on the balconies and stairs though.
Lunch is a more gourmet affair however children are well looked after with three options of Crumbed whiting fillets with chips, pasta spirals with fresh tomato sauce or Mini organic cheeseburger with chips – all with a juice and a cookie for $15. Brunch and afternoon tea is when you will see the most young children running around. Why not enjoy their fantastic High Tea for $30 pp – reservations essential.
Overall, Burnt Orange is a great day out for all the family or the perfect location for that special occasion. After eating, send the kids off with Dad whilst you take a leisurely stroll around the gift shop. The brands are unique and homewares divine. They do have sales a couple of times a year so check out their Facebook page. Apparently the Easter Bunny and Santa visit too!
