Gather On the Green is a cute, popular, little community style cafe. It’s tiny on the inside and not great for prams, but don’t worry because outside, under the awning, there is still plenty of room for buggies at the cafe’s tables. And of course across the road there is even more space at Camperdown Park.
The green location is one of the big draw-cards for local families and the sleepy little cul-de-sac in Fowler street provides an unusually safe space for kids to explore the park with its big shady trees and grass. It’s hard to imagine you are so close to the grime and noise of Parramatta Road! Grab a rug provided by the cafe and sit out in the fresh air, to sip, munch and play on sunny days.
If you do fold up and go inside to eat, the interior is a delightful miss match of vintage chairs from the sixties, mason jar lights, old signs, wooden crates and distressed plasterwork murals and exposed brickwork. There is also a clipboard set up with colouring in sheets and pencils for the kids to occupy themselves on rainy days. The cafe’s ethos is to be as sustainable as possible with an emphasis on ethically sourced coffee, meats and locally produced veggies, cheeses and eggs. The menu has lots of eggy breakfast favourites and there are plenty of vegetarian options and although there isn’t a separate kids’ menu, there is plenty to choose from.
