Jerry’s Millkbar is an old general store come milkbar come corner store, that still manages to retain it’s original retro charm. It is a bit of a Melbourne institution and has been around for many years… however at the same time, it also manages to be a bit of a hidden gem and is mainly popular with south-side locals.
In true old-school form, they welcome the little ones, along with the beckoning calls of the enticing lolly counter. Kids can really let their sweet tooths run riot here and also indulge in spiders, milkshakes, fresh juices and hot chocolates. Special child sized ones of course. And as always there is the trusty Baby-cino too, which is served in a paper cup… perfect for clumsy little hands.
Inside it is all retro, vintage vibes, with a comfortable and cluttered feeling, however this means that it may be a wee bit squashy with prams, however never fear as there is ample space out the back in the sheltered courtyard. No change table here, just a single shared toilet. But they do have highchairs… our old fave’s from Ikea.
The courtyard was packed with other families when we were there for lunch with another family, and there were kids happily playing and running about everywhere. But mostly the kids hung out under the shade of the beautiful old fig tree, where a cubby house, little kitchen, ride on cars and plenty of toys sat below, ready to be played with and enjoyed.
The food here is simple and delicious, and the little ones can choose from kid’s serves of pancakes with maple syrup and ice-cream, single eggs on toast as well as other standard breakfast items like toasted sangas, toast with Vegemite, peanut butter and croissants.
And for us big kids there’s Bircher muesli, cinnamon porridge, fruit salad with organic yoghurt, French toast, pancakes, BLT’s, pides, rolls and fresh salads of the day. The Genovese coffee is great too, and to go with it there is a selection of freshly baked muffins, cakes and slices, perfect for an afternoon treat.
