Kanteen is located on the banks of the Yarra river, right in the heart of leafy, green South Yarra. If you have been here before or have read any other reviews, then you would be familiar with the fact that Kanteen is in an old toilet block. Yep, you heard me right. Don’t be put off by this though, as what stands there now is a cool kid-friendly cafe serving fantastic food and coffee in a unique location.
They have highchairs (the standard white Ikea numbers) and change tables too. There is no separate kids menu but their normal breakfast and lunch menu’s should appeal to the little ones, and they even offer small and large sizes of some items like the porridge and muesli. They have a great selection of cakes and slices and pastries on display at the front counter, as well as kid-friendly jars of choc-chip cookies and gingerbread men.
Being an old toilet block, and being situated right on the bike track on the river, Kanteen rocks the whole indoor/outdoor vibe, and there is plenty of outdoor seating, which also means ample room for prams, strollers, bikes, scooters, skateboards and space for kids to run amok. It seems to be a very popular place to meet after a bike-ride with the kids, or a jog/walk with the pram, or even after a spot of rowing on the river. Or for the un-sporty like us, it was just a really good place to go and have a yummy Saturday breakkie, a decent cup of coffee, a flick through the paper and some good people watching, all in a place where our little ones were accommodated and welcomed with open arms.
The staff here are aplenty and were all really friendly and helpful and seemed to love kids, happily playing and chatting with them.
They serve breakfast until 3pm, and have a great menu with porridge, muesli, black sticky rice, eggs, toasted pides and fruit loaf, rye melts and croissants. The bread they use is good, their jams are by Jam Lady Jam, and the coffee is Genovese and is served just right. For lunch it is mainly Pide’s with a selection of different fillings, a couple of tasty salads and some daily specials.
This place is perhaps more suited to the warmer seasons, as a lot of their seating is outdoors or is under plastic so it can get a little bit chilly. But in winter it is still fun, so rug up warm, pack some extra bunny-rugs for the pram, and get some fresh air by the banks of our lovely Yarra.
