The courtyard at Martin St Cafe is a sweet little spot to dine and relax with your little ones. It is sheltered from the wind, and is a great place to soak up some sunshine while the young ones play and have fun. The olive trees, citrus trees and pots of succulents complete the relaxed backyard vibe. It actually reminds me a lot of our old backyard at our first house. There is a ramp making it is easy to manoeuvre your pram, there are a couple of cute little kiddie chairs, a big box of well-loved toys to play with, an outdoor loo, and the piece de resistance – a huge blackboard running the length of one of the fences.
In true kid-friendly fashion, there are also a number of highchairs available for those little tackers who need them. There are no changing facilities though, however the indoor toilet is quite roomy if you do need to change your charges.
Inside there is a cosy relaxed vibe. The front section could be a bit squishy with prams, however once you pass through the the walkway past the kitchen, lined with shelves of cook-books and foodie mags, it opens up to a larger back area which would be much more comfortable for prams and little ones, which then opens up onto the courtyard.
The food here is fantastic, fresh and well-priced. The breakfast menu includes staples such as bircher muesli, and big cooked breakkies, and for lunch there are a selection of pre made sandwiches and baguettes with tasty fillings, and a couple of different gourmet salads of the day using interesting ingredients such as quinoa and fregola. There are also cooked items on the menu – we enjoyed a chicken, leek and white wine pot pie and a traditional Greek spinach and fetta pie, Spanikopita. It was not the same as her Yaya’s (Greek grand-mother) however our little one still happily devoured it.
Plenty of sweet treats adorn the front counter- from brownies and cakes, to tarts and pastries, and even homemade rocky road.
Boutique wines are available by the glass or bottle… a perfect accompaniment to a lazy lunch in the back courtyard.
The Providore section at the front of the cafe sells Jam Lady Jams (the blood plum jam is the best!), Zeally Bay Organic Sourdough bread, cakes, biscuits, tea, herbs and take home meals for those in need of a little helping hand with tea!
