A wooden “like a bike” parked just inside the front door, a lovely doggie and one of those plastic toddler bikes on a stick out on the front footpath, a bugaboo leaving when we arrived, a double mountain buggy arriving when we were leaving, a stroller and two little ones on the table next to us… sounds like a pretty popular spot for brunching families, huh!
Omar and the Marvellous Coffee Bird, located on a small suburban shopping strip, has a hip industrial warehouse feel about it. It’s light, bright and clean. There’s an exposed brick wall, lots of blonde plywood, open shelving and a mezzanine open office area up a ladder. The tables run the length of the cafe and are on tracks so they can move around, making the tables as big or small as you need them to be. There’s a big coffee roasting machine, and a small courtyard out the back with bright red watering cans hanging on the wall adding a hint of colour and a bit of fun. All in all, it’s one cool looking cafe, with plenty for the little ones to look at too.
There are groovy black highchairs for the little ones to sit in, room for prams and coloured pencils and colouring in books to keep them entertained.
The staff were pretty amazing, and you get the feeling that they are definitely seasoned hospitality professionals. Our sweet waitress was friendly and efficient and her funky little pussycat ring caught the attention of our little one, and was very much admired.
The coffee was superb (although no de-caff option) and they roast and blend their own coffee on site. As there is no proper kitchen, the menu is quite small, but is definitely short and sweet. No boring old bacon and eggs here, but lots of tasty, simple options made using fresh quality ingredients instead. There’s no kid’s menu, however most of the options on the main menu could easily be enjoyed by the kidlets. Our little one munched on Noisette fruit toast along with her “cino”, whilst on the table next to us a toddler tucked into a croissant with butter and jam. There’s are also pastries, croque monseiur, organic baked beans, avocado and fetta on sourdough and bircher muesli.
The little ones will also love the yummy selection of toasted flat-breads and fresh rolls for lunch, Hepburn flavoured mineral waters, organic juice, smoothies, babycino’s and milkshakes to sip and for a cute little sweet treat there are gingerbread men.
This is is already a hot-spot for Gardenvale locals, and was just buzzing with food and coffee loving families. It is definitely a great place to enjoy brunch or a great cup of coffee with the little ones in tow.
