One Six Nine Cafe is one of those cafes that does everything just right. The food is very good and consistent but not too flashy, the staff are friendly but not intrusive. What’s not to like? A plain simple interior houses a busy, thriving local cafe that’s extremely popular with families. This is because the owners really run a tight ship to keep up the quality control and a firm grip on efficiency. At the same time the young staff keep smiling despite being kept busy all day.
One Six Nine has a winning house speciality in its Benedict dishes. Regulars keep coming back for the excellent house made Bernaise sauce. Choose eggs benedict with either smoked salmon, field mushrooms or the more conventional ham which comes in large ($16) or small ($10) There’s also a great selection of salads and filling sandwiches such as the chicken club with alioli, bacon, lettuce and tomato served on sourdough ($14).
Although there isn’t a separate children’s menu, there are some items on the regular menu that come in full and half serves as well as some of the drinks. They also provide babicinos and there are pastries and quiches on display that are just the right size for little hands to grip.
The kids’ play area in the courtyard is incredibly popular; with its blackboard and plastic toys. There were some kids books though to keep those kids stuck indoors occupied. One of the really nice things about this cafe is its social conscience, not only has it been known to rescue stolen dogs and locate their owners but the cafe also has lots of fundraising drives for the local hospital, cancer research and homeless charities. You can also feel pleased that they donate unused food to the charity Harvest at the end of the day.
