This cafe exudes warmth and charm… the red and white decor, the friendly staff, the vintage mismatched plates, the water served in old glass milk bottles, the huge display of sweet treats and of course the tasty homemade food. And the fact that it is tucked away in a residential area and is obviously very popular with local families also adds to the very cosy, casual, relaxed and warm vibe.
A popular spot with local Mums and bubs, staff and owners that are very welcoming to the little ones, and they now provide provide highchairs (no changing facilities yet though, but they are installing one soon). It could become a wee bit squishy inside though if there were more than a couple of prams.
They also offer lots of other cute little kiddie-friendly touches… from the kid’s toasties that are included on the menu, through to the stack of childrens books that can be read and enjoyed, through to the perfect babycino served in a paper cup and decorated with colourful mini marshmallows on top. There are also milkshakes, smoothies and fresh juices, which are creatively served in old jam jars, which are all also suitable for a wee one. There is ample seating outside on the quiet street and a cute, sheltered courtyard out the back.
There is an array of cakes, baked goods and sweet treats on display, including some old childhood favourites that the little ones will love – honey joys, chocolate crackles, gingerbread people (how politically correct!), lamingtons, rocky road and sweet little lollie bags for an afterschool treat, reward or even bribe.
If you are having breakkie or lunch then there is plenty to choose from too, with original menu items like the breakfast burrito or brioche French toast, and home made sausage rolls, tarts, pies and toasties.
In true local shop/corner store fashion, you can pick up a loaf of fresh bread, milk, and the paper… and you know you are definitely in Northcote as not only can you get The Age or Sun, but also Neos Kosmos, the Greek paper. There’s also packets of home made muesli, biscuits, coffee and home made jams. And if you want to start being kinder to the environment when you pick up your next takeaway latte, you can also purchase a cute red and white Enviro Keep Cup, which just so happens to match in perfectly with the red and white decor!
This is a lovely local cafe, and if you live in the area, then you are lucky to have this as your local. I’m very jealous.
