The Portarlington Bakehouse is a charming old school bakery complete with all your old favourites including Vanilla slices, custard tarts, caramel slices, apricot slices and apple strudels as well as croissants and pastries.
For lunch there are home made pies and pasties, as well as sandwiches, pides and wraps all made on bread that was freshly baked that morning. And to drink, milkshakes, coffee’s and of course our favourite, babycino’s.
There are so many tempting choices on display that I almost couldn’t make up my mind what I wanted to have after my pastie and sauce for lunch. In the end I opted for their famous French Vanilla Slice, which was to die for! Delicious pastry, custard, a layer of whipped cream, more flaky pastry and icing sugar on top. Mmmmmm!
We enjoyed our lunch and sweet treat at a picnic table out in the hidden back courtyard, which is huge. It makes for a wonderful lunch spot, and a magical play area for the little ones. They can run around and run amok, and be dwarfed by the tall tomato plants and gorgeous towering yellow sunflowers. There is a fun playground with slide, swings and fort, and even a totem tennis pole.
When we were there for lunch, the staff were very friendly and chatty and were more than happy to show us around the old bakehouse and ovens out the back.
There are highchairs too, plenty of room for prams, but no change table.
This is one lovely bakery, and is a perfect quick, easy and relaxed lunch spot if you are holidaying this way, or just stopping by on your way through.
